To organize a VIP flight of a large group of passengers over medium distances, we recommend using the Fokker 100 business jet. The aircraft is designed for a non-stop flight at a distance of about 6 thousand kilometers, it develops speeds up to 755 kilometers per hour. Fokker F100 and F70 became successful successors to the popular airliners of the F28 series. However, their Dutch manufacturer failed to reduce production costs, which eventually led to its bankruptcy. This is how the history of Fokker aircraft ended.

In the late 1970s, Fokker was developing a new design to replace the F28 Fellowship. The obvious first step was to lengthen the 100-seat plane to the size of a 130-seat Super F28 airliner. It was planned to offer such a plane to buyers by 1984. At that time, Western European airlines did not have small jets, and Fokker decided to bring large aircraft to the market. The Super F28 was the F29’s 150-seat aircraft, although its design was still unclear. At one point, Fokker was going to use sections of the Boeing 737 fuselage. She then joined forces with McDonald Douglas in the MDF 100 project, but this project was shut down in the late 1980s. The firm had only one choice: to return to its proven F28 design.

In November 1983, Fokker announced that it was developing a 100-seat version of the F28. This aircraft was started as a Fokker 100 (F100) project along with the Fokker 50 turboprop (a modified version of the F27 Friendship). Deliveries of the $14.9 million F100 could begin in 1987, with Fokker forecasting a market for 750 such aircraft.

The new aircraft used the F28 fuselage, extended by 5.51 m to accommodate 107 passengers. The F100 also received a new, longer wing, modified cockpit glazing and Rolls-Royce Tay turbofan engines. Early versions had Tay 650-15 engines rated at 61.60 kN; these were later replaced by Tay 650-15 engines rated at 67.19 kN.

In July 1984, Swissair became the first customer for the new airliner, ordering eight aircraft to replace its DC-9s. Fokker made several changes to production aircraft in response to customer requirements. The aircraft were equipped with Collins EFIS cockpits with six glazing panels and a Honeywell flight control system, and their operating weight was increased. The first prototype did not fly until November 30, 1986, and certification was postponed to autumn 1987. The aircraft completed a 1,100-hour flight test program and was certified by the Dutch authorities on November 27. Swissair received the first production aircraft on February 9, 1988. On April 3, it began operating on the Zurich - Vienna route.
