The A321 is a medium-haul passenger aircraft developed by the Western European consortium Airbus. The A321 project, which was an A320 aircraft extended by 7 m, was announced by the consortium in April 1988, and in May 1989, the consortium began searching for customers. The A321-100 program officially began at the end of November 1989. The final assembly of the aircraft was chosen by the plant of the German company DASA in Hamburg; before that, all aircraft of the Airbus Industry consortium were assembled at the aviation complex in Toulouse (France). The first prototype aircraft A321-100 took to the skies on March 11, 1993, and in January 1995, Lufthansa Airlines received the first serial board.
